DEA Awards

The 2011 National "Dance Educators of America" competition proved to be quite successful and rewarding for some of our most advanced dancers this past July.

Trevor Hansen (the 2010 reigning "Teen Mr. DEA") received the prestigious "Executive Director Award" - which is awarded to the over-all highest scoring dancer, with all age groups combined, and including solos, duets & trios. Trevor proudly, and humbly accepted this award after earning a nearly perfect score (.7 from a perfect 300) for his contemporary performance of Consequence of Sounds , choreographed by Miss Jennifer Johnson of SVAD.

Also receiving impressive awards were Reid Wells, who earned a Platinum award for his self-choreographed solo performance entitled Hold it Against Me, and Alexandria Hoare (Both Hands & Sort Of, both choreographed by Jennifer Johnson) and Rosalind Stables, (You'll Find a Way, by Jennifer Johnson) both of whom received high Gold awards for their solos.

We are so proud of all of these talented performers and anticipate another exciting and rewarding year ahead with a competition group of 40 members strong!

Who says dudes cant be dancers?

Football, soccer, wrestling, ballet ...

For boys? Really?

For years, Skagit Valley Academy of Dance co-director Shelly Whan has been trying to convince boys that there’s nothing wrong with ballet, jazz or dance in general.

The perception that dance is “for girls” has contributed to an annual problem around November: Who will play the role of the Prince in the academy’s production of the classic “The Nutcracker”.......more

About Skagit Valley Academdy of Dance, Inc.

A Quality Dance Education

Skagit Valley Academy of Dance can trace its roots back for more than 27years. Some of its former students have gone on to careers as professional dancers, some have chosen to teach. All enjoy a love of the dance which was fostered in a school that encourages the joy of dancing.

Studio space at the academy is large and bright with an excellent dance floor designed to minimize fatigue. The facility, built in 1991, was planned as a dance school and is one of the largest privately-owned dance academies in Washington State.

The Skagit Valley Academy of Dance is proud of its affiliation with the nationally renowned Dance Educators of America, as well as its performing and national competition team, "Dansations", which holds auditions for advanced ages 9 through adult.

Our Vision

"I hear and I forget... I see and I remember... I do and I understand..."

At whatever age, there is something about that statement that really applies to dancing. Whether it's ballet, early creative movement, tap or jazz, - learning to dance is accomplished not by hearing or by seeing, but by doing.

Perhaps, it's simply another way of saying that a dance school should be student oriented. As young students at the dance school that would later become the Skagit Valley Academy of Dance, we learned just how important this concept is. And it has been a guiding principle for our dance academy ever since.

You see, we believe in the joy of dancing... in the self-satisfaction and the sheer pleasure of dance motion. Self-expression... discipline... self-esteem... poise... freedom... grace... strength... and, yes, fun - this is what dancing is all about.

We welcome the opportunity to share with you our own excitement and enthusiasm. At Skagit Valley Academy of Dance we believe that learning to dance is and should be, learning to love to dance.
