KASEY THOMAS
instructor
I began dancing with SVAD when I was 7 years old, giving me 10 joyous years dancing for the studio I called a second home. During my time as a student I competed in dance competitions, performed in many years of The Nutcracker, assisted/student taught classes, and had the opportunity of choreographing solo and group dances for younger students.
I attended Washington State University from 2018-2023 where I received a bachelor's degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology. While at WSU, I continued my love for dance as a member of the Crimson Girls dance team. This team gave me the opportunity to work with professional dancers and choreographers, compete at UDA nationals in Orlando, and gave me some of my lifelong friends. At WSU I taught fitness & dance classes such as Pilates, Barre, cardio dance, Lesmills body combat, ballet, contemporary and tap dance. Through this experience I was able to teach and connect with so many people in the community, furthering my love for teaching and the connection it brings.
In my final year at WSU I interned in the Psychology of Physical Education Lab on campus under Dr. Anne E Cox. The research projects within the lab focus on how to optimize physical activity experience, increase intrinsic motivation to exercise in the long-term, and the overall benefits of physical activity from a psychological standpoint. While interning in this lab I took the lead on a project called “Find What Moves You,” a program for middle school aged girls with research themes of mindfulness, self-compassion, body-image & embodiment, physical activity motivation, and positive youth development. The program showed young girls different ways of being physically active with reflection aimed towards finding what movement feels good within their body. This program has inspired my love for teaching, my compassion for all my students, and I continue to be fascinated by the topic of sport psychology.
In 2023 I rejoined the SVAD crew this time as a teacher. With SVAD I get the opportunity to work with students of all ages and levels, choreograph solo/duo/group choreography, and continue my education as an instructor. I am certified in both Module 1 and Module 2 of Acrobatic Arts, an acro-dance based program, and have taken a lead in our acro program at the studio. In addition to acro, I teach ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, and hip-hop. Outside of teaching I love live music, summer time, snowboarding, and spending time with my family and friends.
